The U.S. Senate has confirmed Paul Atkins, also known as "Crypto Paul," as the chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) following a 52-44 vote on April 9. His nomination by President Donald Trump marks a significant shift in leadership at the agency, which has recently faced scrutiny over its regulatory stance on crypto.
Atkins’s confirmation on April 9 follows his nomination by Trump late last year, designating the pro-crypto former Wall Street consultant to lead the agency. He previously served as an SEC commissioner from 2002 to 2008, a period marked by the global financial crisis.

During his earlier tenure, he gained experience navigating complex regulatory challenges, which may inform his approach to current issues in the crypto sector.

The Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott expressed confidence that Atkins would maintain a pro-crypto approach. Under the Trump administration, the SEC established a Crypto Task Force to engage with the industry and rolled back several investigations initiated during Gensler's leadership.

Atkins founded Patomak Global Partners in 2009, focusing on regulatory compliance and risk management. He also co-chaired the crypto advocacy group Token Alliance until late 2024.

His confirmation process faced delays due to required financial disclosures, particularly following his marriage to Sarah Humphreys Atkins in 1990, who is connected to TAMKO Building Products LLC. Their combined net worth is estimated at over $327 million, with Atkins reportedly holding up to $6 million in crypto-related investments.

As he prepares to assume his new role, Atkins is set to navigate the complexities of digital assets, aiming to foster innovation while ensuring regulatory frameworks are in place.
