Former US President Donald Trump narrowly dodged an alleged assassination attempt on September 15, as shots were reportedly fired near his location at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
A Trump spokesperson, Steven Cheung, released a brief statement to confirm that the former president is safe: "President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time." The incident happened while Trump was reportedly playing golf, a favorite pastime of the former president.
Few details are known, but officials speculate the shooter might have tried to attack Trump. Donald Trump Jr., the former president's son, said that law enforcement officers recovered an AK-47 rifle at the scene. Their claims, however, have not been independently authenticated by any law enforcement agency.
This is the second assassination attempt on Trump, the first happening at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. The incident sent ripples far and wide, sending Trump's odds of winning the presidency to new highs on prediction markets.
This comes in the wake of a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, where Trump's odds of winning the election slid 3% to leave him essentially tied with Harris.
